High in the Tasmanian wilderness on the edge of the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain / Lake St. Clair National Park; a place renowned for its wealth of natural beauty and a must for any visitor to Tasmania Sheffield is known as the "town of murals". Over 30 murals depicting the area's history decorate many of the buildings in the town. It lies in the shadow of Mt Roland and the surrounding area, known as Kentish, is scenic farming land. The home of championship rowing in Tasmania, picturesque Lake Barrington is at the base of the Forth River valley. It was created in 1969 by the building of the 84 metre-high Devils Gate hydro electricity dam on the Forth River.
